Barry, My Liege
I write to disagree with suspending food aid to North Korea.
Consider an analogous, albeit hypothetical situation:
A pimp armed with a .50 cal machine gun is holding some women hostage. The women are ill and need medical attention. He has agreed to let us send in doctors and aid, but then says he has changed his mind and fires the .50 cal into the air.
I would hope our action at that time would be to incapacitate the pimp and rescue the women.
Let us be clear : North Korea is a gangster regime which holds its population in misery and abuse.
Suspending food aid to the suffering people does NOT harm the gangsters, but it does harm the suffering.
Our first aim is to do no harm. We violate that in this case.
By keeping our commitment to the suffering we open channels of communication, give sustenance to the suffering, provide hope to a desparate population and demonstrate our contempt for the gangster regime.
I beg you reconsider, My Liege.
Your faithful servant,
